A Must See – Coco before Chanel

Posted in beauty, designer, Fashionista, inspiration by fashionista514 on October 14, 2009
So last night I was finally able to indulge in a long awaited movie night… and man have I been lusting, drooling, and pulling my hair out in anticipation for this movie to come out. Coco before Chanel. The life story of the woman who brought menswear to women. Breathability, simplicity and function in a time where corsets and overly lavish accessories reigned. The beauty of difference. The personality of dress.
The beautiful, and insanely talented Audrey Tatou plays her in the movie that focuses on where she came from and how she adopted many of her signature looks and styles. What I think I loved the most is how they pointed out where she got her inspiration from and how she transformed it into something completely unique and fresh… completely ahead of her time.

The other very relateable emotional undertone of this movie is independance and love. Mostly a mixture of the two. Being able to fully indulge in a romance without social fences and boundaries, as well as stand apart as a woman from a man. It seems her life was about survival of the key emotional ingredients… love, independance, success and pride. She did all of the above in the most unconventional of ways… yet always remained a cut above the rest when performing it all in an elegant and classy way.

Leaving the theatre made me smile… even though Chanel was born in 1883, she still holds a one-up on even today’s generation. Walking out of a film filled with natural beauty, sophistication and pure elegance into a theatre filled with women in sweatpants and sneakers… just goes to show that she is STILL far ahead of her time.

Please go see this movie. It will breathe creative life into your everyday existence!

Fashionista Fairy… take me away…

Posted in couture, designer, inspiration, worries by fashionista514 on September 1, 2009
Today feels like the end of the world. Life suddenly got far more serious than I wanted it to and left me stranded all by myself. I am all alone with my thoughts. To ease the craze… I turned to the masters of the art of design to get me through these tough times… the very people who turn mere fabrics into shapes, feelings and beauty. They make something miraculous out of nothing on a day-to-day basis. Douse your eyeballs out in couture!

What I wouldn’t give to be lost and drowning in emotion in one of these beautiful Chanel Couture pieces it would make sorrow and pain seem ultimately beautiful and poetic…
Now no worries blog buddies… I ain’t gonna slit my wrists or anything… just my life hittin‘ a bump in the road that totalled the bicycle I was ridin‘ along on…
I have been feeling very lady-like rock star as of late… channelling my inner red lipstick goddess… adorning myself in black lace, black and white diamonds (both fake and real – it’s all about mixin‘ it up!), feline eyeliner (can’t live without it anyways… who am I kidding???), and introducing a healthy dosage of the never-go out of style cheetah print. Bliss.
This orange completely made my day. Thank you Mr. Dior (sending thanks into the clouds from earth)! How beautiful and inspiring is this color with such a conservative skirt? Lovin‘ the contrast and ultimately luxe look of this edgy ensemble.

Yummy hat. As in yummy as tapioca or rice pudding… or better yet… CHOCOLATE!!!

This outfit is sunshine!

The oh-la-la dramatisme remind me again why I am not in Paris walking around like this every day!?!?! I would love to sip my latte in that dramatic hat!

She makes me want to eat salad for the rest of my life and dye my hair red… if only just to look as good as her in these two outfits!!!

Can’t really see what purpose this trench would serve in the rain, but who the eff cares when you are lookin‘ that foxy?!?!

Hope all of you luvers are doing well and having a better start to the week than I have! And thank you all for reading my posts – it is my therapy. I am so lucky to be able to share the inner workings of my crazy mind with all of yous! I already feel better just from writing this post πŸ™‚

Muchos Bisous!

Could there possibly be anybody cooler in the world…

… than David Bowie??? NUH UH!!! not even close…

The owner of the Diamond Dogs, the mayor of Suffragette City, the original Starman, master of C-c-c-c-c-changes and the alter ego of Ziggy Stardust… David Bowie is a storytelling mastermind… Not to mention possible one of the coolest and avantgarde fashionista’s out there…
Okay… I have total Space Oddity lust and envy over this makeup… sensational!

My mother’s side of the family are all British (which may very well explain my addictions to tea, Elton John and Mini Coopers covered in Union Jacks…), so naturally we are ones to recognize our own. And god damn am I proud to be in any way associated to David Bowie (and all my other British loves)! It seems as though Bowie was always with me… my grandmother, mom and her sisters seemed predestined to be followers of his intellectual escapades in storytelling. I like to imagine my moms family growing up as uber hippie folk… art, music, literature, love, funk, color and rebellion. And what a better landmark of the times than a most perfect discography πŸ™‚ Enter Bowie…

This man oozes a coolness whose source I fail to comprehend. How does he do it (and where do I sign up?!). He is so much himself that there is no room for anything else. Such a master of his craft. Such an artist. Representing his art form through layered forms of self expression… dance, instruments, singing, fashion, makeup, acting… is there anything this man can’t be a revolutionary at???

I still remember buying my first CD of his… Greatest Hits… it was at a GARAGE SALE (fool who considered that worthy of giving away), and I paid 50 cents for it with THE PLASTIC WRAP STILL ON!!! Obviously the poor soul had no clue as to what he was missing out on… you see… somethings are just MEANT to find you. The same CD still resides with me and continually rocks my little world day after day after day.

Labyrinth, Labyrinth, Labyrinth do you know how many times I’ve seen this movie? At least 50 (no joke). You see, as a child it was the only movie I would ever allow my mother to rent for me… so I have the whole thing memorized in my mind. This movie was when I fell in love with everything that this man is and represents. The true individual within all of us – in its purest form.

May we all worship that little shrine in each of our heads dedicated to Bowie… (don’t lie… I know it’s in there).

Fashionista Packaging – Marketing Masters

Posted in fashion, inspiration, marketing masters, wow by fashionista514 on August 25, 2009
Marketing, more times than not, remains the reason we purchase what we do. And honestly, who the hell wouldn’t want to possess these items when some marketing strategies are so damn inspiring and cool???
With the marketing mind control that exists in the world today, companies are working smarter to obtain eye catching advertising that grab attention. We are so bombarded that our culture is fazed by the norm… even the sexual edge that everything seems to hold. Step it up peoples… we are BORED… naked people are nice, but real creativity and thought come not from picking on our natural urges, but our imaginations!

Now THAT is effective advertising… how cute!

I wonder what’s inside… banana juice??? Ewww….

This bag reminds me of those aprons you can get with the lingerie clad bodies printed on top πŸ˜‰

Fun times!

Fashionista Flare – Warhol Vs. Phillips…

Posted in artwork, fashion, Fashionista, inspiration, makeup by fashionista514 on August 22, 2009

… Send me back in time…

Before I even say ANYTHING… first off – how effing AMAZING is the hair on these outfits??? What a well achieved effect. Kudos!

We all love a healthy dose of pop art now do we not? I for one cannot get enough of the mainstream artistic interpretations… sometimes not interpretations at all. The beauty of pop art to me, is the ability to capture the popularity, the celebrity, and the celebrated… and transform it into an eternally timeless classic. Making a momentary spark last forever.

The master of such in my world is Warhol. This man found beauty in the absolutely, obviously mundane. His superficial and off-set nature gave him a keen eye as to what was seen as interesting. His obsession with wealth, fame and self perception allowed him to capture everyday items and make them completely iconic.

“It would be very glamorous to be reincarnated as a great big ring on Liz Taylor’s finger.”

-Andy Warhol-

Richard Phillips is a rather new inspiration to me (MAC Cosmetics has currently released a new collection in collaboration – thank you for opening my eyes MAC ;), however I can’t seem to shake (nor do I want to) the vibe of the seventies from his pop culture portraits. I am totally feelin‘ his bright contrasting colors, silkscreen looking paintings, and close eye for mod details.

“They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.”

-Andy Warhol-

I want this above my bed… I WANT… must find print online….

I love apples and ba nay nays…

This girl is SUCH a tease…

“In the future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.”

-Andy Warhol-

β€œI never think that people die. They just go to department stores.”

-Andy Warhol-

this dress gives new meaning to the phrase “eat my shorts”…

Canada’s own! Coco Rocha portrait, as done by Phillips! Isn’t she lovely? It’s the great Canadian air I tell ya πŸ˜‰

Always the artist, the experimental Warhol poses for a self-portrait of his “lady face”

β€œIsn’t life a series of images that change as they repeat themselves?”

-Andy Warhol-

“I am a deeply superficial person.”
-Andy Warhol-
What is it about mod girls anyways??? I guess it’s the same thing that draws me to the rebellious flappers of the twenties… they are gorgeous young fashionable women who rock all sorts of funky dramatic colored eyeshadow in hopes of channelling Twiggy or Verushka while rockin‘ psychedelic prints. Oh… the short hair is just awesomeness… miniskirts, platform heels, disturbingly amazing decade of music… can someone please zap me back in time???? I wanna spend my weekend in the seventies ;p

“Fantasy love is much better than reality love. Never doing it is very exciting. The most exciting attractions are between two opposites that never meet.”

-Andy Warhol-

β€œAn artist is somebody who produces things that people don’t need to have.”

-Andy Warhol-

Hold the phone… hook me up with these bad boy Campbell’s Soup shoes please!!! They are kickin‘ (no pun intended… really… I’m not like THOSE people…).

Happy Saturday folks! Make the most of your weekend!

Sexual Inspiration – Fashionista Style…

Posted in Fashionista, inspiration, lingerie by fashionista514 on August 21, 2009
I scoured the net to find some of what I think to be the coolest play things out there on the market… and I must say, I think I did well… I want EVERYTHING in this post! Check out that “Rubber For Lover” gun… ummmmm… envy…. can you imagine how sexy that is tucked into a garter?!?!
… blindfold for your inner wildcat… rrrrrowwwww!!!

Rose petals in the bath will make any girl feel like the ultimate goddess…

Pearl ring… beautiful right?!? Well this gorgeous design also doubles as a massage tool for him and her (if ya know what I mean…) Can you all say GENIUS?!?!

For all you naughty homemakers who love the aesthetic of burlesque and boudoir interior design, this pillow’s mask comes off for you to wear… how fun πŸ˜‰

Some of my personal inspiration… whatever beautiful things you may consume and posses, your personality and soul are the most valuable thing you own. Make sure you polish it and take as good care of it as you do everything in your material world πŸ™‚

Horsie tail pillow… turns into detachable whip! This is especially wonderful for getting through to your man when he is being one of the following:

a. A douchebag (beating him up will make you feel better… seriously it will)

b. Not the manslave you thought he was… :p

c. Non responsive and refusing to get off the couch and get you that pop tart you’ve been craving (and how convenient… the pillow will be right beside you on the couch – no need to get up!)

Nipple pasties! Now these I do own and seriously recommend! You know why? The glamour!!! Everybody needs to let out their inner Dita Von Teese whether they know it or not… Funny enough too, when you are wearing them you feel dressed (or maybe I’m just whacked)…

Be it in the bedroom or in actual life, start walking towards the person you WANT to be. The person you WISH you were. Eventually you will become exactly that. If it is in you and you are imagining it, it is possible to realise. Don’t cut yourself short – life is too short! Have fun and ignore the people who try to hold you back… that is THEIR opinion – not YOURS!

Love Package from Chrystina :)

Posted in contest, friends, friendship, funk, gift, giveaway, inspiration, lipstick, my man, prize, thank you by fashionista514 on June 27, 2009
So if you didn’t already know, I was the runner-up winner for the GORGEOUS and poetic Chrystina’s NARS contest/giveaway (out of 100 peeps yo – soooo amazing)!!! If you aren’t already following her beautiful thoughts, go IMMEDIATELY… RIGHT NOW to her blog

Whimsical Rose

Once you get there you will know exactly what I mean when I say that this girl is heartbreakingly beautiful in every sense of the word… she can find beauty in absolutely everything and her posts dictate personal strength, motivation, dreams and dilemma’s… all the while adding a fairytale twist to her every perspective πŸ™‚ This is why I am addicted to her blog… it is her au naturale… raw art.

Alright, so enough with the sappiness… on with the show πŸ˜‰ Look at the beautiful vintage card she sent me!!! Complete with a Barbie sticker to seal the envelope… loves it…

Chrystina shared some tips on how to “work it” in my new NARS Dolce Vita lipstick (will be posting pics verrrry soon), and quoted one of my absolute favorite scenes from Sex and the City (remember when Carrie is standing by the water fountain in the white dress with her hair all wild and curly…)

“Maybe some women aren’t meant to be tamed. Maybe they need to run free until they find someone just as wild to run with them”

-Carrie Bradshaw-

How true is this quote… I cannot even begin to explain… Some women can handle being in a relationship ruled by a man. Some can handle being suffocated and held down from achieving their dreams. Some can accept that no matter how devoted they are to their man, they will never see it returned. Some can put their lives on hold for another, only to find out in the end that their lives are already over.

I am proud to say that I am not, and never will be one of these women. I have found my wild match who, chases me actually, and keeps me reaching for everything I ever wanted to achieve. If one day he were to change, he would have been the one who had made me strong enough to not care, and just do it anyways :). Thank you babes – you have given me the priceless gift of self worth, confidence and “fuck the world, I’m gonna do whatever I want”

… like I said… priceless πŸ˜‰

Alright, alright… seems today we are getting quite sidetracked huh?!?! Back to business once more…

So, as if a beautiful card filled with beautiful words and a NARS lipstick weren’t enough… darling Chrystina included this super funky/fresh red & black zebra print bangle!!! Groovy baby (that is my tribute to Austin Powers… I will shut up now…)!!! I LOVE THIS BRACELET! I can already feel it’s gonna be bringing out my wild (favorite) side… πŸ˜‰

Thank you girl! Your package was so thoughtful and packed with a taste of your personality – tres cool… I consider this bracelet some kind of friendship bangle – def always think of you when I wear it.

For all of you who read this post and DIDN’T do as I TOLD YOU TO at the beginning (going IMMEDIATELY to Whimsical Rose)….

***sorry… not meaning to be rude… I’m just dishing it out today***

How To Live Life

Posted in inspiration, reminder by fashionista514 on June 9, 2009

Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. Look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. Think only of the best, work only for the best, and expect only the best. Forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater acheivements of the future. Give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. Live in the faith that the whole world is on your side so long as you are true to the best that is in you!

IMAGINE – John Lennon & Yoko Ono (Montreal Moment)

Posted in inspiration, montreal, museum by fashionista514 on June 2, 2009
I cannot wait for tomorrow… I am itching for it to be Tuesday already…
Why you ask!?!?

I am going to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts to experience their “Imagine” exhibit, based completely on the life, times and work of the beautiful John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

When I think of pure and eternal love, I think directly and completely of them.

This picture which graced the cover of Rolling Stone was actually taken just hours before John Lennon’s assassination by the now iconic photographer Annie Leibovitz. As tragic as the picture is perceived now, the vulnerability of love is written all over it.

This picture touches the deepest part of my heart – it is thoroughly beautiful.

Did you know their famous “Bed In” interview in 1969 was held in the fabulous 514?!?

The pic above is the inseparable couple at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel’s suite 1742
(downtown Montreal)

I love the harmony between these two soul mates.
Working together towards peace, and always together being naturally themselves.

True inspiration to the world. Their relationship was so symbolic to the movement they supported. I cannot even imagine losing someone to whom you have such a strong bond, but Yoko has continued on – always full of grace and compassion for her and her lovers cause. The way he would have wanted I’m sure.

Tomorrow I am prepared for my heart to overflow with the utmost amount of love, respect and adoration for these exceptional beings thrown into the world to walk amongst us mere mortals.

No matter how short the time we all have on this earth is, we are truly blessed to have “love leaders” such as Yoko & John.

Peace & Love
